One of my favorite pleasures is going out for a delicious afternoon tea in a charming tiny tea shop or a posh hotel. However, because most venues charge a large fee, the experience might become somewhat costly.
I, on the other hand, enjoy hosting my own afternoon tea events at home. I’ll attend a tea party for any reason: a baby shower, a birthday celebration, a girlie get-together with friends… anything that involves cake! There are numerous advantages to hosting your own afternoon tea gathering.
It means you can order all of your favorite dishes (I despise it when egg sandwiches are on the menu!) as well as sticking to a budget Plus, if you’re a crazy vintage crockery hoarder like me, it’s an opportunity to get out all of your best china and flatware!
Here are some of my best recommendations for throwing your own vintage-style afternoon tea gathering.
Set the table
Set the mood with a lovely table laden with sweets. Set the table with your finest silverware and dust off your best crockery and tea cups. These don’t have to be overly ornate, and they certainly don’t have to match.
I’ve collected mismatched flowery vintage china from charity shops and car boot sales throughout the years. Personally, I adore the jumbled appearance!
If your tableware is a little boring, dress it up with attractive paper doilies and floral napkins, or invest in a patterned tablecloth to brighten things up a little. Tea gatherings are also a great time to use cake stands! Display your sweets on a tiered stand, or place the cake on a single tiered stand.
Decorations
You could wish to add some decorations to the space as well. A simple container of fresh flowers, or a string of colorful bunting, is a wonderful simple suggestion! You may also grab a few balloons or make tissue paper pom-poms to hang from the ceiling if you’re celebrating something special.
Try throwing a themed tea party and matching your decor to your meal! Instead of sandwiches and cakes on fine china, I recently hosted a Tropical Tea Party for a few of my friends, and instead of sandwiches and cakes, we served chicken fajitas and nachos on fruity paper plates!
We all wore Hawaiian floral neck garlands as decorations, and I had flamingo bunting and watermelon napkins to match!
Menu
The next step is to create a menu. Sandwiches, scones, cake, and tea are frequently served at a traditional afternoon tea celebration. Keep the sandwiches simple; my favorites are cheese, ham, and cream cheese with cucumber.
However, you can be as daring as you want, or ask your guests ahead of time what their favorite sandwiches are! Just keep in mind that you’ll have to create them first thing in the morning before everyone arrives, and you don’t want them to dry out if you make them too early!
I then cut my sandwiches into little triangles and placed them in the middle of the table on a sandwich plate.
After that, scones and cake are served! Although I enjoy sultana scones, some individuals may prefer plain scones, so getting both is a nice idea.
To go with the scones, I made tiny dishes with cream and strawberry jam and placed them on the table. Scones require a thick cream, so about an hour before guests come, I mix mine up with a whisk and a pinch of icing sugar.
Get a lovely teapot and several china teacups to serve tea the old-fashioned way for drinks. People can serve themselves milk and sugar from a small milk jug and sugar bowl on the table.
I’m not a big fan of tea, so I always keep a cold drink on hand. Fresh orange juice in a glass Kilner bottle or pink lemonade in a lovely pitcher jug are the drinks of choice for me. I simply use cloudy lemonade and a drop of pink food coloring, then add lemon slices, raspberries, and ice to make the lemonade pink.
Because afternoon tea is so laid-back, it’s simple to enjoy without too much effort or planning. Plus, there’s no need to cook! Instead of a standard afternoon tea, a cheese and wine tasting party with a variety of cheeses, crusty bread, cold meats, chutneys, crackers, and wine could be a fun alternative.
Actually, I believe that will be the location of my next tea party!

Print the final draft of your invitation card on any printing paper you have chosen. For me, I’d rather to use a quite pricey paper for better quality than using a cheaper ones but sacrificing the quality.
