A tacky Christmas sweater shouts “ho-ho-ho.” Invite all of your pals to your Ugly Sweater Christmas party to show off their own ugly sweaters. Guests will enjoy dressing up in their most outrageous outfits and praising each other’s choices.
Ugly Christmas Sweater Party Ideas
As the holiday season approaches, the ugly Christmas sweater craze has resurfaced, with a slew of people donning them with panache. Look no further if you’re still unsure how to throw an ugly Christmas sweater party! We’ll go through the basics of what an ugly sweater party is and offer some ideas for throwing your own this Christmas.
Party Decorations
Stock up on extra inexpensive ugly sweaters for décor while you’re at the thrift store, in the attic, or on an auction site. Use duct tape to tape the backs of a few sweaters together and use them as a table runner, or hang them from a clothesline like a huge ugly pennant banner.
Paper doors in ugly present wrap and hang multicolored lights all over the place. Display any old, humiliating holiday family photos you may have (extra points if you’re wearing ugly sweaters!).
Fill any available spots in your party area with Christmas decorations if you want to go all out. Hang red and green paper streamers from the ceiling and decorate the party area with brilliant, colorful Christmas lights. Stick ugly sweater window clings around the party area.
Cover an open wall in your party room with a vibrant Christmas-themed scene setter to create a backdrop. Make a backdrop out of Christmas wrapping paper if you’re feeling crafty. Your guests can use the scene setup as a photo booth area. Just keep a few Christmas photo props handy!
Party Costumes & Outfit
Of course, ugly sweaters! Look for the worst holiday sweaters you can find in a thrift store, in your parents’ attic, or on online auction sites. If you can find a vintage holiday sweater with candy canes, elves, wreaths, or other seasonal patterns from the 1980s (the golden age of ugly Christmas sweaters), all the better.
You’re short on time? There are websites dedicated just to selling these sweaters and reveling in the humiliation of new ugly riches. Or do it yourself with an old sweater.
To transform yourself into a huge present, add glitter fabric pen accents, sew on jingle bells, safety-pin on garland and/or plastic decorations, or just add ribbon and a giant bow in the front using double-sided tape.
Food & Refreshments Ideas
What’s in the center of your ugly sweater party food table? A cake with an ugly sweater! Make an ugly sweater out of any rectangle cake. You can also make ugly sweater sugar cookies with sweater cookie cutters or decorate gingerbread men with their own small ugly sweaters. For the rest of the menu, skip the gourmet and opt for vintage and fun.
Try red and green Jell-O shots, wreath-shaped pigs in a blanket, bacon-wrapped tater tots, Christmas tree-shaped pizzas, fruitcake, and/or a cheeseball garnished with red pepper and parsley like an ornament. Offer a variety of green and red sodas, grasshoppers, and/or mulled cider as drinks.
Warm drinks are required in the ugly sweater weather. Serve your party attendees hot chocolate or coffee. Don’t forget the whipped cream (available in a variety of flavors as well as non-dairy options!) Sprinkles, cinnamon sticks, cookie straws, and festive syrups like peppermint, gingerbread, and caramel.
Collect or purchase a set of festive mugs (or ask everyone to bring their own favorite mug). You can create a large batch of hot cocoa in a crock pot if you don’t have a Keurig for single-serve Swiss Miss.
Party Games & Activities
A fashion show featuring ugly sweaters is a must. Let everyone know that there will be rewards for the best show on the invitation. There are a few possible categories: most festive, most unique, just plain ugliest, and best couple (feel free to choose the two visitors whose sweaters match the best, even if they are strangers).
You can even have an ugly Christmas carol karaoke competition with your guests. Allow your guests to do their best worst Bing Crosby impressions by playing karaoke renditions of carols from a music streaming source.
Finally, make a photo background out of a large piece of cardboard painted with a garish Christmas scene so that attendees can take photos that they’ll be proud to include in their Story. You might also want to include some amusing props like mistletoe, an elf headband, or a Santa hat.
