For her recent 9th birthday, my middle daughter requested a unique party theme. I wanted the party theme to mirror her personality because she is vivid and exciting. We brainstormed and came up with the concept of throwing a tropical Hawaiian Luau Party.
Isn’t it right now that you wish you were in Hawaii? Relaxing on the beach, soaking up the sun in a tropical paradise of pineapples, coconuts, and laid-back vibes?
If you can’t afford to fly to the islands right now, a tropical Hawaiian-themed party may be recreated in your own home or garden.
A luau, which means ‘feast’ in Hawaiian, is a traditional Hawaiian event. A luau’s spirit is abundant food, drink, entertainment, and good times! Guests are greeted with flower leis, dancing is encouraged, and the eating lasts until the early hours of the morning.
A Hawaiian luau is the ideal theme for an outdoor summer celebration, with bright décor, a buffet full of tropical Hawaiian delights, and lots of cooled drinks to wash it all down.
It’s also appropriate for a family gathering, with plenty of fun games and activities to match the theme, or an adults-only celebration (just make a few more batches of tropical punch for your guests).
Follow our tips for throwing a luau on a shoestring budget, and your guests will be doing the hula!
Prepare the Decorations
Creating a tropical mood is essential when decorating for a luau. Hawaiian floral designs, flowers, and plenty of greenery are all on the menu. Magenta, turquoise, and bright sunshine yellow can all be used in a décor scheme.
Having a large number of leis on hand is an important feature of your gathering. To bring the authentic Hawaiian feel of a luau, hand out these colorful paper garlands to guests upon their arrival.
Incorporate tiki torches into your yard as an additional finishing touch. If you want to party late into the night, this will be an excellent addition. To ensure the safety of your guests, place the torches away from where they will congregate. Always have a fire extinguisher on hand.
Table Dessert
The snack table, replete with a pineapple “palm tree,” can be seen here. To give it an island feel, I used a yellow and white tablecloth with fishing netting draped over it.
The bottom section is made up of a slew of kid-size grass skirts that were trimmed and fastened in place using safety pins. Two tropical backdrops were obtained side by side at the Dollar Tree for the background. At $1.25 per, you can’t go wrong.
Guests were given a Hawaiian lei upon arrival, in keeping with the luau theme. Hearing the youngsters say “aloha” to guests was so adorable.
I sliced the core out of the pineapples and inserted two of the straightest unpeeled bananas I could locate inside the three pineapples to keep them upright for the palm tree.
After the party, I knew I wanted to cut up and eat the leftover pineapple (waste not, want not), so I needed to think of something edible to put in there. Lol. It held up nicely and was easy to install. I’m sure dowling could be used as well.
The “palm tree leaves” are really artificial ferns acquired from a cheap store. Before putting the stems inside the top pineapple, I put them in a ziploc bag.
Games & Activities during a Hawaiian Luau
After the meal, it’s time to get the games started! Competitions to discover ‘warriors’ who can show off their physical strength used to be a big part of traditional Hawaiian luaus.
Rather than strength tests, your party activities should keep your guests engaged and ease them into the festive luau atmosphere!
Traditional Hawaiian music will help to set the tone. There are plenty of beautiful ukulele sounds on Spotify’s ‘Hawaiian Dreams’ playlist, or you could listen to Elvis Presley’s iconic ‘Blue Hawaii’ album.
Put on your grass skirts and show off your hula skills!
Set up a hula hooping competition for your guests, such as seeing who can keep a hula hoop up the longest or do the most hoops in two minutes.
Set a limbo dancing challenge to take the dance party to the next level. See how low your guests can go with a bamboo pole or a broomstick!
