Tropical Wedding Theme on A $500 Budget
I was amazed by this couple who had spent $500 on a beautiful tropical beach wedding. The idea for a low-key beachfront wedding came to Kaity and Tanner fast. The couple had been engaged for six months and had made little headway in wedding planning when inspiration struck: their forthcoming Florida trip (only two weeks away) would be an ideal location to tie the knot, with all of their family already in one place.
With their closest friends and family at their sides and a cotton candy sky as a backdrop, Kaity and Tanner pulled together one of the most romantic beach weddings we’ve ever seen—all on a shoestring budget of only $500. Here’s how they went about it.
The wedding took place in a stunning beach house on the lake in Santa Rosa, Florida. Tanner’s extended family had already reserved the house for their summer vacation, and Kaity added her immediate family to the list of bunkmates once their wedding preparations were finalized. Kaity created the most beautiful outside chapel for the sand ceremony, complete with plants, lights, and rugs and throw pillows for guest seats.
The addition of greenery to the ceremony and reception was a fantastic save. Kaity and her mother-in-law happened to pass by a crew of landscapers throwing out a motherload of magnificent palm fronds and grasses on a serendipitous bike ride earlier in the week, and they inquired if they could keep them. To create tablescapes and lovely design settings, seashells, starfish, and tropical fruits were added to the flat-laid greenery.
Kaity borrowed from family members (the wooden crates she used for her altar; the blue glass vases she used for her greenery) and bought new items for the rest of her decor (hurricane lanterns; luminaries). Their lovely flower girl’s favorite part of the ceremony was the signs, which she found at a nearby thrift shop.
On the gown front, Kaity desired something light, airy, and unpretentious. (After all, getting married on a white sand beach necessitates frolicking in the waters barefoot!) With this in mind, she bought a lacy two-piece lace costume from Lulu’s overnight and delivered it to a tailor for last-minute modifications just a week before the party.
Kaity desired a natural beauty appearance and applied her own makeup, but she also wanted flawless, beachy waves to match the backdrop. So she paid $30 to get her hair curled at a local hairdresser.
The celebrations at the reception could not have been more intimate, relaxed, or emotional. The crew enjoyed an oceanfront sunset while the groom, his father, and sister sang and played the guitar while their family gathered barefoot on the deck to watch the sunset.

Invitation tip:
The full names of the couple getting married, the names of the hosts (if they’re different), and the location and time of the ceremony should be all that’s on the wedding invites. No phrases such as “no children” or “adults only” should be placed on the invitation card; the names on the envelope will imply who is invited. You should also leave off the register information—family and wedding party members can spread the word if they are asked, or you can put it on your website.
