My husband and I kept our son’s birthday parties simple and low-key when he was a baby, inviting only family. We figured there was no point in spending a little fortune on a party that our son wouldn’t remember because he wasn’t old enough to recognize the difference.
His third birthday, on the other hand, was more difficult because he’d reached the age where he was being asked to his playmates’ birthday parties.
We understood that our simple family get-togethers were too exclusive for him, and that they couldn’t compare to some of the more spectacular birthday bashes he’d attended.
It can be tough for the rest of us to keep up with so many parents throwing their children pricey, extravagant birthday parties these days. People have rented out luxury restaurants and banquet rooms to celebrate their children’s first birthdays.
The parents turned their backyard into an amusement park for a four-year-recent old’s birthday party, complete with rides, a bouncy castle, a cotton candy machine, and a popcorn maker.
Even the simple three-year-old birthday parties we visited last year at local kiddie gyms and activity centers cost the parents well over $500 for only two hours of amusement.
Don’t panic if a large, activity-filled party isn’t in your budget. You don’t have to break the bank to have a wonderful party.
Getting a Party Venue
Rather of hosting birthday parties in their own homes, many parents opt to hire a location. You won’t have to worry about setup, cleanup, or providing entertainment for your guests if you book a location that contains an activity. However, holding your party at an outside facility will cost you significantly more money.
You may feel pressured to rent a space if your home is small or the layout isn’t ideal to host a large number of children. The following are some examples of rental locations that provide entertainment for birthday parties:
Kiddie Gyms
Party packages range from $400 to $600 for a two-hour party at chains including The Little Gym, My Gym, and Gymboree.
Studio for Dance and Martial Arts
For a two-hour party, dance and martial arts facilities normally charge $300 to $500, with prices ranging by region.
Museums, zoos, and aquariums
Party packages range in price from $300 to over $1,000 depending on the region and age category.
Kid Entertainment Centers
The famed Chuck E. Cheese’s company offers a range of packages, with prices ranging from $15 to more than $30 per child depending on region.
Some rental facilities don’t provide entertainment for birthday party attendees:
Party Rooms
It’s common to be able to rent a room at a local recreation center or institution of worship for $100 to $300, but you’ll have to provide your own entertainment and food.
Pizzerias
Many pizza parlors offer food-inclusive party packages, which start at $8 per person.
Ice cream parlors
Ice cream store parties usually include make-your-own sundae bars and range in price from $200 to $400 for a typical gathering.
If you have the space, hosting your child’s birthday party at your home or in your backyard is one of the best ways to save money. You can save anywhere from $100 to $300 this way.
The disadvantage is that arranging an at-home party necessitates doing more of the work yourself. You’re in charge of the setup, cleanup, and all food and entertainment.
On the other hand, you’re in the ideal position to keep prices down while stretching your funds to focus on the components of your child’s party that matter the most to you.
If the thought of cleaning up after a dozen or more children makes you dizzy, consider hiring a low-cost maid service for a one-time cleanup. Some maid services have new client offers, and if you keep an eye out for them, you may get a cleaning for as little as $40 or $50, which is still much less than renting an outside space.
Total cost of utilizing your home: 0 dollars ($50 to $100 if you hire a cleaning service).
If the venue you rent doesn’t contain an activity or entertainment, you’ll have to come up with something else for your guests to do besides sit and eat.
Parents frequently employ actors to dress up as their children’s favorite characters from television, movies, or stories. The characters can play out skits, choreograph dances, or simply engage with the audience.
Depending on where you reside and how many artists you hire, the fee varies. My buddy hired three performers to dress up as characters from the film “Frozen,” sing songs, and play out scenarios for $150 per hour.
Clowns and magicians are two more popular options for entertainment. For a birthday party appearance, these entertainers charge ranging from $80 to over $250.
It can be expensive to mail out invites to all of your guests. There’s the initial expense of the invitations. Invitations normally come in packs of 8 to 24 and range in price from $4 to $10, including envelopes. Custom invites, which may cost three to four times as much, are also popular among certain parents.
There’s also the expense of postage, in addition to the invitations. If you’re sending out 20 invitations, it’ll cost you another $10 just to spread the word.
