Wedding Invitation Etiquette Mistakes to Avoid
There’s a lot more to creating and sending your wedding invitation than just putting a card in the mail. We asked our experts to weigh in on the most common invitation etiquette blunders and share their advice so that your invites are everything you want (and need).
Not Including All Required Information
A happy guest is one who is well-informed, so make sure to keep your guests informed. On your wedding invitation, include the date, time, and location of the ceremony, as well as any other pertinent information.
If your reception will be held at the same location as your ceremony, indicate “reception to follow” to let guests know they don’t need to go anywhere else. If you’re having a reception somewhere else, you can either include the information on the invitation or, more formally, print a reception card with the time and location.
They Were Sent Too Late
Take your wedding date and subtract eight weeks (for a non-destination wedding). This is the deadline for mailing your invitations so that your guests have enough time to RSVP and make travel arrangements. Are you planning a destination wedding? Count back 12 weeks so your guests don’t feel rushed and have time to compare travel prices.
Not Making It Clear Who Is Invited
It all comes down to the names on the front of the envelope. Use “The Evans Family” if you’re inviting a couple but not their children. Instead, write “Mr. and Mrs. Chris Evans,” implying that they are the only two guests.
If you’re inviting someone with a guest, write “and Guest” on the envelope, or put his or her significant other’s name if you know it. Are you inviting the entire family? Put “The Evans Family” or “Mr. and Mrs. Chris Evans, Cara, Anna, and George” on the line beneath their parents’ names.
