“Welcome to Gotham”
Next up was the transformation of our backyard. I stood there with my hands on my hips, just like Batman would if he was assessing the Batcave, and I thought, “Let’s build Gotham.” Well, not literally build it—but you know what I mean.

I scouted out some big cardboard boxes from local stores (hot tip: appliance stores always have the good stuff), and we painted them black with yellow rectangles for windows. Voila—skyline. Then we printed out Batman logos, stuck them everywhere from the fence to the food table, and cut out dozens of bats to fly across the setup.

Now, here’s the cute part. My youngest, who’s only three, kept yelling “Bat! Bat!” and flapping around like one. He became our unofficial party mascot—Batbaby. Even the food table got in on the action. We had signs like “Joker Juice,” “Batwings” (chicken wings), and “Penguin Pops” (popsicles in the cutest shapes ever).
The whole thing felt like we had stepped into the pages of a comic book, and it didn’t cost me more than a few cans of paint, some paper, and a lot of tape. But the decorations weren’t the only thing the kids couldn’t stop talking about.
