People kept asking me if I had any plans for my 28th birthday celebration as the months passed. The proposal sparked a lot of interest, but I had no idea how I would commemorate my 28th birthday. To come up with birthday dinner party ideas, I went to Pinterest. I had the brilliant idea of throwing a summer dinner party for my pals. I had high expectations, however many of the concepts were very expensive to implement. It seemed almost impossible with a zero-dollar budget.
As the date approached, I considered the sensation I wanted to retain with me from my 28th birthday. If you read my earlier piece about living with intention, you’ll know that I try to do things with intention. I wanted to create a memorable event that I would remember fondly. I wanted to throw a dinner party for my friends where they could enjoy nice cuisine and good discussion. Billie Holiday would be playing in the background, and patio lights would be strung to set the ambiance, in my imagination.
Dinner Birthday Party Ideas
So, without a huge budget to engage a full team of pros, how could I host the birthday dinner party of my dreams?
Use things you already have in your home.
I used cushions from my living room as well as candles I had on hand. My kitchen’s glasses, cutlery, napkins, and plates were used. I went out and bought a few things to round out my guest list. In our kitchen, we had white plates that worked well with the style I was striving for. Mix-matched dishes can also look great. To add some practical design, I utilized my own serving bowls. We also had actual silverware from Joel’s grandmother, which I mixed with dinner forks and dessert forks to ensure that we had enough for all of the guests.
Prepare Your Decorations
To add dimension to your table, you might purchase textured, colorful taper candles. I utilized a combination of beeswax, pink, and white candles in varying textures and heights. I used the gold candle holders from my dining room table to match with them.
A table runner literally puts the focus on your table. It adds texture and dimension to your room while also acting as a framing for the rest of your decor. A linen runner on top of the wood table completed the look.
Bamboo is a stylish alternative if you don’t want to use your own glassware and plates. I adore the look of natural wood, and bamboo’s natural appearance compliments any modern dinner party flawlessly. You can dump the bamboo plates and silverware on top of your compost pile if you have one. Make sure you have a small bin on hand so that everyone can easily put their trash in one place to compost later.
The mood of the evening is set by the right lighting. Our terrace is adorned with patio lighting. The mood was wonderful when I coupled these with candles.
Make Your Own Dining Table
For a family meal, I wanted one table where everyone could sit. We went to the hardware store and got two enormous pieces of wood. We fastened them to a few of the table’s support beams. As a result, the table was simple to dismantle while still providing adequate support. We reused the wood after the party and used it to build shelves in our shed. Set wood pallets on the ground as an option. It can be surrounded by blankets and framed by pillows. If you’re willing to get creative and think outside the box, you’ll find lots of possibilities.
Bring Your Own Seats
We gathered our dining room benches and chairs and arranged them around our deck. The remaining half of the table seating was provided by a built-in deck bench.

Create Your Own Cake
Making your own cake is simple thanks to the abundance of tasty cake recipes available. It can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator overnight. To commemorate my November 15th birthday, I baked my own cake and topped it with firework candles. It was a huge success. I created lovely bite-sized portions with cupcake liners to save money on cake plates. This was a hit with the guests. Everyone agreed that it was the ideal complement to the crab entrée without being too heavy. If you want to be environmentally conscious, use compostable cupcake liners.
Flowers Arrangement
A lovely flower arrangement was one of the things I wanted to purchase myself for my birthday. I wanted a large piece to sit in the middle of the dinner table. The total cost of the deal was $185. You can, however, purchase flowers from your local market and arrange them in a lovely arrangement.
