A birthday dinner party at home is a wonderful way to show how much you care about a loved one. While entertaining friends and family can be a lot of fun, it can also be a lot of work, especially if it’s a special event like a birthday.
I recently celebrated my mother’s birthday, and I must confess that planning all of the decor and meal selections for the big night left me feeling a little overwhelmed. Then it dawned on me that the most essential things were to have a good time and enjoy the company, as well as to make my mother feel special with a beautiful spread.
With that in mind, consider the following suggestions for throwing a stress-free birthday dinner party.
Prepare ahead of time.
I send out invitations to my guests at least two weeks ahead of time. Make a note of any “maybe” responses, as well as any dietary restrictions, so you’ll know how many guests to expect and whether you’ll need to make any additional adjustments. Check that you have enough dishware for everyone and place any orders for supplies ahead of time.
Confirm shipping dates if ordering things online so that everything arrives on time for the celebration. Get anything you need the day before. Doing the deep cleaning the night before is also a good idea, especially in places where guests may congregate. Doing these the day before will save you time and lessen your tension on the big day.
Outdoor party decorations
This was a simple but gorgeous party. The table was set with an all-white tablecloth, gold chargers, and white dinner plates, allowing the flower bouquets to take center stage.
The flowers were white, yellow, and green in color. I really like how she included palm leaves. They were low enough in height that they didn’t block the guests sitting opposite from each other.
You won’t need any expensive decorations to adorn your outdoor party: practically everything you’ll need may be found at home or in the attic, in decor stores and marketplaces, or even done yourself!
Flowers, fabrics, pillows and blankets, garden furniture, hammocks, and swings – all of these elements can help you transform your garden into a cozy haven.
Aside from many outdoor décor ideas, throwing a party entails putting together some comfortable lounging places.
You may buy an awning online or make your own lovely tent out of snow-white cloth with greenery and flowers. A crib canopy, shawls, or a pareo with a vibrant ethnic motif can all be used instead of fabric.
Outdoor party accessories that are bright and colorful will help to create a festive atmosphere. Use or purchase re-usable lighting and fabric elements, such as round boho blankets that can be tossed over outdoor seats and tables and then utilized at the beach or to decorate your walls once the party is finished.
Create a well-themed table
A tablescape adds a personal touch to an at-home birthday celebration. You don’t have to go overboard: a beautiful blush-toned palette with floral embellishments will create a refined and opulent atmosphere. Succulents (which can also be used as a gift when the night is over!) or flowers make excellent centerpieces.
My mother loves rabbits and florals, so I bought some porcelain bunnies and gorgeous succulent plants to decorate the birthday celebration I arranged for her. I also used pink and purple roses as embellishments and a white tablecloth to place everything on. It gave the room a vibrant spring feel!
Make a playlist
Make sure the music you’re listening to is appropriate for the occasion. So that the music doesn’t disrupt the talk, choose slow, peaceful music. My go-to playlists are well-curated mixes of current and soulful tunes that are excellent for creating a relaxing atmosphere. If you’re feeling particularly inventive, create your own playlist using your honored guest’s favorite music.
Keep a simple menu
We had dinner catered to make our night as stress-free as possible. Try Harry & David’s Tortellini with Spinach and Sun-Dried Tomatoes instead of cooking alone. For a well-rounded meal, serve with a fresh side or radish salad.
A cheesecake party wheel allows your guests to sample four different types of a traditional dessert after dinner. My mom adores cheesecake and was delighted to have the opportunity to sample a variety of flavors.
Set out strawberries and other fresh fruit for a snack before or after supper. Field-ripened and hand-picked strawberries from Harry & David are used as a peach substitute.
Think about wine and food pairings
For birthdays, wine is an elegant touch that goes well with most foods (and allows for toasts!). Ellen Sorensen, a wine trader at Harry & David, recommends serving the tortellini with chardonnay and the salad and fruit with sauvignon blanc. The cheesecake dessert pairs well with sparkling wine because “the bubble will cut through the richness,” according to Sorensen.
However, not everyone drinks the same stuff. Offering a few wine selections, as well as non-alcoholic options like sparkling juices or inventive mocktails, demonstrates that you’ve gone above and beyond in personalizing the evening.
Things to do after dinner
Dinner takes only approximately 30 minutes, despite the amount of effort put into it. Leave the plates on the table and advise moving to a different room after everyone has done.
We moved my mom’s supper outdoors to the patio because the weather was lovely, and we played cards and entertained the dogs. Suggest playing a board game, singing karaoke, or taking a walk around your neighborhood for your party.
