Little girls are said to be made of sugar, spice, and everything nice, but they can also be composed of snips, snails, and puppy dog tails! Juniper had a lot of ideas when I asked her what kind of birthday celebration she wanted, and they changed from day to day.
I thought throwing a puppy party would be a lot of fun when she suggested it. So I stopped asking her for party ideas and started making some simple puppy party decorations. The end effect was adorable, and most importantly, our kids had a great day, and Juniper felt special.
Last year, I bought a balloon for Juniper and picked a cake from the shelf at a local grocery shop. My party preparations ended there. “Mom and dad just gutted a house,” we joked as the theme of her birthday celebration.
So I wanted to make her birthday party extra special this year. During the week leading up to her dog party, I spent a little time doing crafts or cooking. Her dog party turned out to be such a sweet affair, thanks to a little effort and a tiny amount of money!
This man is a big reason why we’re all dog lovers, to the point where we’re arranging a puppy-themed birthday party! “Can we please have a puppy this year?” I asked my husband at the start of the year. And he said yes!
So the girls and I scoured PetFinder for months until we came across a particular pair of bonded canines who we couldn’t bear leaving at the pound.
Puppy Birthday Party Decorations
Little paw prints across the walls of our kitchen and dining area were the final puppy party accent I added. I used Google Images to choose a template I liked, printed three per sheet of cardstock, and cut them out by hand. They were glued to the wall with adhesive dots and simply removed during the party cleaning.
I Have Fun with the Colors
With the lovely little Dalmatian as my inspiration, I used black, white, and red for the rest of the design. These colors are not only exciting and fresh (and a nice change from the normal brown used for dog parties), but they’re also a combination that can be found on pre-made balloon garland sets, table cloths, tablecloths, and more!
In fact, I was overjoyed to find tablecloths, balloons, napkins, straws, and other items already printed with the black-and-white paw print and dog bone pattern. I love how graphic and bright they make the entire party table feel, and they were ultimately what brought the puppy dog theme to life without having to use a lot of decorations!
For the dining table and the food table, I bought a white plaid table runner, which added a great splash of color to the party decor. I kept the rest of the design minimal so that the dog ears and novelty food could take center stage.
I couldn’t locate any puppy-themed cups or plates I liked, so I made my own cup decorations and then bought regular biodegradable party plates.
Print off one sheet of this dog bone template from your printer using card paper. Using scissors, cut out each dog bone. Attach each dog bone to paper party cups using glue dots or double-sided tape. The dog bones are not only a cute ornamental element, but they also serve as a convenient place for individuals to write their names on their cups!

I Make Dog Ear Headbands
Instead of party hats, I like to construct unique headbands that match the theme of our birthday celebration. Of course, making dog ears for a puppy party was a no-brainer! They were idolized by the girls.
We also acquired face paint to match the kids’ headbands and give them dog faces. We didn’t do face paint at the celebration since the kids got diverted, but we did it the next day!
I Made Cute Puppy Cookies
The girls intended to make them dog ear headbands, despite the fact that they already had dog ears!
I knew I wanted to make some fancy cookies after viewing the adorable cookies at the baker’s shop. This was the most time-consuming aspect of the party preparation, but it taught me a lot. The next time—and there will be a next time—will be much easier.
After spending some time on Pinterest selecting what type of cookies I wanted to create, I purchased this dog cookie cutter set. I made and frozen the cookies a couple of weeks ahead of time using this butter cookie recipe. Then, two days before the party, I used this royal icing recipe to adorn the cookies.
I Make Puppy Cupcakes
When preparing a party, I believe it’s crucial to know your limits, and for me, that limit was cupcakes. I decided I could bake either dog cupcakes or dog cookies, but I didn’t want to go through the trouble of doing both. So I had a buddy in Ohio make these dog cupcakes for me. They were wonderful, and I loved how adorable they turned out!
I have a lot of fun preparing adorable birthday parties for my kids, and it isn’t a chore for me—as long as I don’t try to do everything myself. (Whenever I’m putting together party meals, I always enlist assistance!) When I’m arranging a party, I usually have a lot of ideas running through my head, so I have to decide where to put the brakes before I go crazy.
