You know how people post these perfect, flawless Bluey cakes on Instagram? Yeah, I’m convinced they have a full-on pastry chef hiding in their pantry. Baking Ellie’s birthday cake was a full-blown adventure. I started with great intentions: homemade vanilla sponge, whipped buttercream frosting, and this adorable Bluey cake topper I found online.

In reality, my kitchen looked like a buttercream tornado had hit it. The first batch came out…flat. Like, pancake flat. I laughed, cried a little, then pulled up my big girl pants and started again. The second attempt? Success! Well, mostly. Let’s just say Bluey’s face was a little lopsided. (Ellie said it made her “look silly,” which, thankfully, was a compliment.) We also made paw-print cookies using a heart-shaped cutter and a circle cutter.

They came out ridiculously cute, and I may or may not have eaten six before the party even started. Oops. At the end of the day, the kids didn’t care about perfect piping or pristine edges. They cared about sugar. And love. And that messy, homemade, full-of-heart cake was absolutely perfect to them. With bellies full of cake and hearts full of happiness, we moved right into party game time — where the real chaos began!
