The second important family event of the year took place this past weekend! The party for my 8-year-old son! It’s a bit frightening to start planning another birthday party so soon after my little girl’s, but I always make sure I put in the same amount of effort.
This year, I’m not sure which came first: a trip to the Leicester Space Centre or a birthday theme, but the theme ended up being ‘Space.’ This topic immediately brought up a plethora of galaxy, planet, cosmic, and starry possibilities, and I rubbed my hands with delight.
Cosmic Space Themed Party Ideas
I knew I wanted to make some outfits for us all to wear, so I set out to do it. To find cosmic cloth, I went straight to eBay. I found some beautiful kitsch cosmic cat fabric that I thought my young girl would adore, but she had other plans and chose a blue and purple swirl galaxy print with glow in the dark stars instead (slightly wasted on a daytime party, but still nice). Joe preferred a print with constellations that shine in the dark. I found a fantastic digital print of a nebula and planet for myself.
I made a skirt for my daughter, a dress for myself, and a grandfather shirt for my son using my own tried and true patterns. I found silver four-way stretch lycra to design a space age t-shirt for myself to wear with my daughter’s skirt and leggings.
I spent a lot of time looking for ideas on the internet and populating my pinterest board with appropriate spacey game, food, and décor ideas.
Cosmic Space Party Decorations
I discovered a lot of wonderful glow stick decoration ideas, but they’re not really practical for a daytime party. Finally, I decided to use glitter and helium-filled balloons to decorate the ceiling. Every Occasion, a local balloon shop, supplied us with silver stars.
Cosmic Space Party Activities
After then, there will be some cosmic events. Making space slime was our first project. This is my first time making it. On the internet, I saw numerous recipes and chose one that used PVA glue and powder starch. I increased the quantity somewhat so that everyone might take some home if they so desired. Because my hands were really gooey, I don’t have any images of us making it. The youngsters enjoyed adding glitter and food coloring to the mixture and taking turns stirring it. However, the mixture eventually stiffened rather than slimed, so we dubbed it a space blob and moved on.
Because the weather didn’t appear to be on our side, I decided to make a treasure hunt rainproof by wrapping all of the items in clingfilm. Rather than interpreting clues, my sister gave me the idea ( a bit tricky at this age).
To find their treasure, they merely had to look for it using the coloured sticker they were given. I printed their names on a square of the same color and affixed it to each tinfoil-wrapped cosmic treasure. Because there were ten children, some of the colors were similar and caused some confusion, but all worked out in the end.
Inside, we decided to play a game called meteor strike. A planet with a score was in each bucket. I filled the bean bags with rice and sewed them out of leftover party dress cloth. The objective of the game was to achieve the best possible score. My little girl was overjoyed at her third-place finish. The winners received additional medals and awards.
We then went outside for more piñata fun and played pass the moon rock, commonly known as pass the parcel.
We concluded that this was a nearly unbreakable piñata because it didn’t seem to want to shatter despite multiple bashes each. Finally, a corner cracked open, allowing the delights to spill out.
Cosmic Space Birthday Cakes
It was time for the birthday cake, after a mad dash to gather as many treats as possible.
The sparklers are now a standard part of every birthday celebration, but they worked nicely this time because of the theme.
We colored sugar crystals blue and discovered that liquid food coloring reacts with chocolate and causes it to become lumpy. Fortunately, we have the fantastic sugarcraft company Sugar and Ice on our doorstep, which sells powdered food colors and recommended mixing them with oil to color the chocolate black.
Perfect for the cake’s galaxy uprights in the back. Adding a little oil to the chocolate also made it less brittle, allowing me to cut the shapes without them shattering.
The kids enjoyed participating with the preparations, such as preparing the party bags and baking, as well as filling the pinata, which added to the enjoyment. Overall, it was a fantastic time. Mummy is a little disoriented at the end of it, but she’s happy!
